Agricultural Imports in 2004
Korea imported a total of $14.7 billion of
agricultural, forestry and fishery products in 2004 according to KOTIS (Korea
Trade Information Service). By sector,
imports of bulk products (corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, etc.) and intermediate
products (products that receive some processing, but are generally not yet
ready for final consumption) amounted to $3.6 billion each, consumer-ready
products amounted to $3.5 billion, fisheries to $2.2 billion, and forestry
products to $1.8 billion.
By country, the United States was the largest supplier
of agricultural products to Korea exporting $3.48 billion, down 1 percent from
the previous year, mainly because of the ban on U.S. beef imports, followed by
China at $2.45 billion, Australia at $1.39 billion, E.U. at $1.35 billion and
Brazil at $730 million.
The largest product imported from the United States in
2004 was corn at $780 million, followed by raw hides at $380 million, soybeans
at $370 million, wheat at $270 million, and cotton at $170 million.
